Framing and Ship-building with Timber

Even though wood had been replaced by many other things as time passed, the use was very important in framing homes and ship-building all throughout the industrial revolution.

This is an example of timber framing. This was used very often in the early 1600-1800s to build homes in Europe and the Americas

This is an example of a wooden sail boat that had been made in the early 1800's. The importance of boats as transportation gave wood an even greater importance. Wood was the most important factor in creating ships.

Timber Role in China:

Timber was used throughout the traditional Chinese architectural history but what really brought this throughout time has been lost. Many people think of timber as a suitable material because as the living drew their sustenance the trees also grew from the ground. Therefore, historically timber was seen to materialize the living while the  materials which came from the ground such as: clay and stone were considered for the dead. (Fu, Chapman, Vale 1)

Trees had a immense value for the wealthy and powerful. Historically the use of timber has always been in direct connection to power or even social status. “Since the scale of the constructions and the number craftsmen involved were enormous, a standardized approach to building became inevitable –and this led to “building standards”.

“Bronze tools such as the axe, knife, and saw were also used, enforcing advancement in the refinement of wood work. In terms of evidence for such refinement, “The garden of Explanations” spoke of the Shang palaces being highly decorated with carvings.” (Fu.. 2)

the compilation of “building standards”. (Fu, Chapman, Vale 1)

The timber pagoda at Ying Province was completed in the year 1056. It is five stories tall, made of generally all wood.
